Fish attributes their fresh perspective to an unexpected hiatus. Noted metal-head Kayzo has done much in the past year to marry his rock roots with his bass-heavy productions, collaborating with popular metal outfits Underoath and Our Last Night.Īmo adds to this lineage with a decidedly rock filter, but it blurs the lines so candidly, it seems to mark a new chapter in the group’s story. More modern times have honored From First To Last singer Sonny Moore’s evolution into mega-producer Skrillex. The ‘90s were flush with popular examples, from industrial rock icon Nine Inch Nails to “death pop” band Orgy. The intersection of electronic and metal is nothing new. It’s about trying to do rock music in a way that opens it, makes it feel like something that could actually work going forward rather than just being a retro rehash.” That’s pushing things forward – even if it doesn’t work sometimes.
“We’re a rock band,” Fish says, “but where we can, we try to take the opportunity to mess around in … that little sweet spot where it could be a metal band trying to do electronic music, or it could be a guy who sometimes has drums on his songs. Indeed, the band’s chameleonic character has helped BMTH to become one of metal’s most successful acts for ages, but where earlier work flirted with genre crossover, Amo engages in unabashed appreciation. Ever since Fish joined the group as a session musician on 2013’s Sempiternal, the group has increasingly incorporated synthetic elements and overall electronic atmospheres.

"It's the same medium, only now it sometimes asks for input, kind of like a dream or a bedtime story, where you're not entirely in control and that's part of the experience." It's kind of like déjà vu. Though the CYOA format was a challenge, Fish says it was worth it. "She brought many ideas and an awesome aesthetic sense to the table.
